Your questions
Short answers about what Shoyu captures, who can see it, Studio, agents, and getting started.
Is Shoyu only for developers?
No. It's for the whole product team — engineers, designers, PMs, QA, support, marketing. Engineers get the most context attached automatically because their tools expose the most. Everyone gets the app and window context, and page context once the browser extension is installed.
What gets attached without me doing anything?
The app and window you were in, the browser page and title when the browser extension is installed, and the file and line range when the editor extension is installed. A terminal you record with shoyu terminal record adds a replay of what it printed. Deep Context adds console and network metadata for a tab, never the page contents.
Who can see my recordings?
You choose for each recording: Private, shared with your organization, or Public for anyone with the link. New recordings start Private. Team organizations also start with external links off, so nobody can make a recording Public until an owner or admin allows it.
What does it cost?
Per seat, no feature tiers — every team gets everything. Prices aren't public yet. Early Access teams use Shoyu free until paid plans start, and keep an Early Access discount when pricing goes live.
How do I get it?
Request access. We onboard teams by conversation right now, one at a time, so we can learn from how you use it. You'll hear back from a person.
Windows? Linux?
Not yet. Mac first, until it feels fast and quiet. Viewing works in any browser.
Can I search old recordings?
Yes. Moment search covers what was said, what file or repo was open, and what ran in the terminal, across every recording your team can see.
How does my agent record?
You turn on Automation in Shoyu's settings, once. After that your agent can start, drive, and stop a recording through the shoyu command, and attach a title, summary, and markers. It can never turn that setting on itself.
Does Shoyu record what I type?
No. Shoyu records where you click and move, so playback can highlight clicks and redraw the cursor. Keyboard shortcuts such as ⌘C can show in playback, but that is off until you turn it on, and it never shows what you type. The one exception is the commands in a terminal that you record.
Does Shoyu upload my code?
No. Code context points to the repo, the file, and the line range. It never uploads code or selected text, and it is never shown unless it was on screen in the video.
What is Deep Context?
Deep Context adds console error markers and network request details for one browser tab in one recording. It is off by default. You turn it on, and the tab shows “Shoyu Capturing” the whole time. It never captures page contents, request bodies, or cookies.
Does my transcript leave my Mac?
Transcription runs on your Mac, and nothing is sent to a third party to make it. One outside service sees recording content by default: OpenAI suggests a title from the transcript and context. Owners and admins can turn that off.
What is Studio?
Studio opens a recording in your browser. You can skip slow parts, change the speed, zoom in, draw an arrow or a box, and adjust the audio and the captions. Edits save as you go.
Does Studio change my original recording?
No. Every edit is a version. Version history lists them, Compare original shows the first take, and Restore original returns to the start. Viewers can still watch the original.
Do viewers need an account or an app?
Recording pages work in any browser with nothing to install. Anyone can open a Public link. A Private recording, or one shared with your organization, needs an account that has access.
Which tools does Shoyu recognise?
Shoyu links Figma, Linear, Notion, and GitHub, and reads the file and lines from Cursor, VS Code, and Devin Desktop. It reads the page from Chrome. Anything else still gets its app name and window title.
Which browsers work with the extension?
Chrome, Chromium, and Vivaldi work today. Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera are next. The Shoyu app adds the page title and link to your recordings once the extension is installed.
Can I record just one window?
Yes. Pick a window, a display, or a portion of the screen. Add your camera, one or more microphones, and system audio if you want them. A shortcut starts a recording of the window under your cursor.
Can my team control what Shoyu captures?
Yes. Owners and admins set one policy for the team. They turn each context layer on or off, set the default visibility, and decide whether external links are allowed. Members can read the policy at any time.
Is there a command line?
Yes. The shoyu command records a terminal so playback can replay what it printed. It also lets an agent start and stop a recording. Terminal capture is output only unless you ask for more.
Can my agent search recordings?
Yes. Agents can search recordings and read their details through MCP. They only reach what you can see.
